Mary-Kate Olsen: Not so innocent now?
The once squeaky clean twin's name has been dragged into the Heath Ledger tragedy... and she doesn't emerge looking good
As if Heath Ledger's untimely death at the age of just 28 wasn't shocking enough, the news that the masseuse who discovered his body called Mary-Kate Olsen three times before finally dialling 911 has left Hollywood scratching its head.
With the implication that Heath and Mary-Kate were close enough for her to be the first port of call in the case of an emergency - when most people might have called an ambulance - heavy in the air, the once squeaky clean twin is not emerging from the tragedy in a very good light.
As revelations about her party lifestyle, "casual dating", and alleged bullying tactics through her lawyers muddy her once fiercely protected image, Ahlan! goes behind the headlines in search of the real Mary-Kate - the one her tween fans know nothing about...
Heath and Mary-Kate: What was going on?
From the outside, they made an unlikely pair - the intense, quirky, talented actor and the skinny, fashion-obsessed rich girl - but sources have come forward to say that the pair were casually dating since as far back as 2006.
Meeting in the summer of 2006, when Heath was temporarily living at young Hollywood hotspot, the Chateau Marmont hotel, pals say the pair enjoyed a shared taste for a hedonistic party lifestyle and that their "dating" was "casual" and "non-exclusive".
"Mary-Kate and Heath were casually dating for three months before Heath's death," a source told People magazine. "They were hooking up, but neither were particularly interested in making it exclusive." Adding, "They had a bond that was based on partying, and they had the same tastes in partying... like, in terms of where they liked to hang out in New York, what time they would want to go out. They just had the same sensibility."
The ‘missing three minutes' - suspicious behaviour?
Theories abound about the actor's tragic passing, rumours that Mary-Kate has fuelled after dispatching her bodyguards to Heath's apartment, instead of calling paramedics. And the New York Post - which has called for the actress to be questioned by police - asked, "Why did she send her bodyguards to the scene? Why didn't she tell the masseuse who found Ledger's body to call 911?" - both valid questions.
And Australia's Sunday Telegraph has claimed that Mary-Kate's bodyguards entered Heath's apartment three minutes before paramedics, which has had Internet sites asking the question: "Would Olsen's bodyguards have had time, or instructions, to remove any embarrassing evidence?"
Heavy handed legal threats?
The New York Post's Editor-in-Chief, Col Allan, claims that Mary-Kate's lawyers contacted him as soon as the newspaper linked the actress to Ledger's death. He has also speculated that her high-powered legal team may have put pressure on the NYPD to eliminate the 21-year-old actress from their enquiries.
"Almost immediately after the tragic passing of Mr Ledger, Ms Olsen's attorneys began emailing us threatening messages," revealed Col Allan. "We find it strange if Ms Olsen was not questioned at all." Adding, "The New York Post will not be pressured, and we find it off that the chiefs at the NYPD appear to be terrified of 4ft 11, 90-pound Mary-Kate Olsen."
She parties two days after "friend" Heath's death
The twin did some irreparable damage to her supposed ‘mourning status', heading out to a New York club just two days after her supposed "friend's" death. Hitting Manhattan club Sweet Paradise, two days after she released this statement - "Heath was a friend. His death is a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time" - MK was spotted kissing her rumoured boyfriend, artist Nate Lowman - attracting disgusted reactions.
"It was weird to see her and her pals there with a bodyguard in the corner keeping an eye on her," said a clubber. "She didn't look concerned with anything that had happened with Heath at all."
All of which prompted one angry blogger to blast, "Your thoughts are not with his family. Your thoughts are with your ever-increasing suspicious name being associated with the death of a beloved figure."
Why didn't Mary-Kate call 911?
That is the question that has got LA buzzing, and a police source has shed some light on the situation, revealing that masseuse Diane Wolozin's first call to Mary-Kate was "for guidance".
"She knows that when something goes bad, you call ‘insiders' first to see how to handle things," another source added.
And Wolozin is said to have called Mary-Kate four times (three before dialling 911 and again once afterwards), with insiders saying that MK didn't suggest calling 911, instead saying, "I'm sending my private security."
"We respectfully decline to comment," said Olsen's lawyer.
