Mel Gibson and his wife Robyn are divorcing after 28 years of marriage. The divorce petition, which was filed on Monday by Robyn, has cited "irreconcilable differences" for the split and the 53-year-old is seeking joint physical and legal custody of the couple's youngest son, Tom who turns 10 today. She is also asking for spousal support and attorneys fees for her lawyer Laura Wasser who is representing her in the case - Wasser has handled divorces for Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder.

In an interesting twist, the petition also reveals that the couple had actually split on the 26 August, 2006 - just one month after Mel's infamous drink driving arrest.

The couple have seven children together and have vowed to keep their divorce amicable for the children: "There's a lot of mutual respect and they've worked hard on their marriage and worked hard on their separation," revealed a source."They'll handle the divorce in the same respectful way."
