Since it was first hailed as a hippy capital in the 60s, party peeps have been flocking to Goa, western India, to sample its famed all-night parties and beautiful unspoilt beaches, caressed by the warm Arabian Sea.
Boasting a temperate climate and a free-spirited joie de vivre, Goa’s love of food, drink, music and dance has been translated into a flamboyant modern-day party scene, that still attracts hoards of young holiday fun-seekers.
Whether you’re after lazy cocktails at a beach shack bar, party cruises, live music or all-night raves, Goa has it all.
But there is more to this former Portuguese colony than sun-soaked beach parties. Thanks to its blend of European and Indian influences, the tiny state is steeped in rich culture and history.
From the red-tiled roofs, wrought-iron balconies and winding streets of the sleepy capital Panaji, to the Baroque churches and mighty Portuguese cathedrals and convents in Old Goa, there are camera rolls of exploring to be done.
Bypass the gap year student-plagued hostels, and opt for more luxe digs, with a stay at the idyllic Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa. Set on 45 acres of lush beachfront gardens, its sprawling Sereno Spa, inspired by Ayurvedic and Yogic traditions, will help you recover from all that partying!
While you’re there...
Hit the beach at Benaulim
Two miles south of the tourist-trodden Colva beach, lies the hidden gem Benaulim Beach. A stunning sweeping crescent of white sand, fringed with coconut palms, it’s hailed as Goa’s most beautiful and idyllic stretch.
Pick up a bargain
By night, Anjuna Beach is Goa’s party central; by day it’s famous for its Wednesday flea market. Browse for souvenirs, trinkets, shawls and jewellery amongst authentic Tibetan and Kashmiri stalls.
Find a tropical retreat
Die-hard yogis will be in nirvana at the Purple Valley Retreat. Spend some R‘n’R time practising Ashtanga in the lush tropical gardens or getting massaged in palm-leafed huts.
