Tired from the Christmas festivities, finally kicked the in-laws out and bored of the leftover turkey sandwiches? Then get away in the New Year and jet off to bustling, and certainly never boring Kuala Lumpur. Known affectionately as KL, Malaysia's capital has a wealth of experiences to offer, so whether it's good food, lively markets or serene temples you're after, KL has it all...

Gwen performed here this year, and Entrapment with Catherine ZJ and Clive Owen's Children Of Men were also filmed in KL.

What to do

Visit the temples
At the Batu Caves you'll find the impressive Sri Subramaniam Temple with its 42.7m-high statue of Hindu god, Lord Murugan, and 272 steps to the temple caves where priests chant and monkeys roam freely. Others worth visiting include the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu Temple and Mosque Jame.

Check out the markets
Whether it's intricately handcrafted souvenirs, gorgeous gifts or priceless trinkets you want, you'll find it all at the Central Market. However, those seeking colourful hustle and bustle should check out Chinatown's Petaling Street - where everything from fruit and veg, to bags and clothes are up for grabs.

See the sights
The famous Twin Petronas towers, where you can enjoy spectacular views from the Skybridge, is a must-visit. For more great views head to the Menara Tower's observation deck.

Take a wander
Get back to nature by visiting the Royal Lake Gardens, where animal lovers will find deer and butterfly parks. And flower fans can explore the lovely orchid gardens.
