It’s a rescue story with a positive ending, just the kind of thing you want to read about to start your day! ‘Emerald’, a green sea turtle brought to the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project at Burj Al Arab three years ago, was released from the beach at Madinat Jumeirah on 25 November 2011.
The 40kg turtle, when first brought in, had been after suffering from life threatening injuries. Emerald recovered, thanks to the care provided, and made its way back to the ocean, watched by hundreds of guests and competition winners.
Five other green sea turtles were also released as part of the UAE’s 40th National Day Celebrations.
On the morning of the release, Emerald was fitted with a satellite tracking device that enables the public to monitor her movements throughout the world's oceans while gaining new insight into the life of a turtle.
Dubai’s only turtle rehabilitation project is a collaboration between Jumeirah’s Aquarium team and the Wildlife Protection Office, with essential veterinary support provided by the Dubai Falcon Clinic and the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory.
